uMhlabuyalingana Local Municipalityi s one of five municipalitiesthat fall within uMkhanyakude District Municipality.  uMhlabuyalingana is located in the far northern part of KwaZulu-Natal, sharing its northern border with the country of Mozambique.

The municipality is deeply rural, with almost its entire population living in traditional authority areas. Several nature reserves are located within the municipality, including the Isimangaliso Wetland Park which is a World Heritage Site (Wikipedia).

Umhlabuyalingana Municipality is made up of 99% Black African population.  The population is very young : 41.2% are younger than 14 years and 54,8% are between the age of 15 and 64 years and and 4% o are older than 65 years.  The language spoken by most of the people( about 95% ) is Isizulu.

Education

Census 2011 reveals that over 81.%( 236 245)  out of a total of 291 600 of persons aged 5-24 years are attending school and just 19% (55 355) were not attending school.  About 22 274(30.5% ) of the population aged 20 and above  had no schooling, 4,5% higher education  had and matric(16 222) 22,2 % had matric.  Males makes the highest  proportion of the persons that have some primary school up to higher education while the proportion of males with no schooling is higher than that of females.

Births

Statistics provided by the Department of Health indicate facility delivery rate of 123,3.% . The broad base pyramid between age 0-4 years indicate high birth rate.

Deaths

Statistics provided by the department of health indicate facility  mortality  rate  of 6.3% for children under 1 year and facility infant mortality rate of 4,8 for under 5 years.  HIV/AIDS prevalence was 25 437 and HIV deaths were recorded at 2013 with 1369  other death causes.  The narrow pyramid at the top indicates high death rate from age of 60and above with few males reaching the age of 60 and above.
