Mbalo brief – October 2025

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) compiles data on economic activities within each province, producing provincial gross domestic product (GDP) figures. The provincial GDPs
estimates add to national GDP with each province contributing depending on their respective dominant industries such as manufacturing, agriculture and mining among  others. On 18 September 2025, Stats SA published Provincial gross domestic product, 2024, data which indicates that the real GDP increased by 0,5% in 2024. Results further show that six of the nine provinces recorded a rise in economic activity. The strongest growth was recorded by Limpopo (0,9%) Gauteng (0,8%) and Western Cape (0,7%). Limpopo expanded by 0,9%,driven mainly by two industries: finance, includes real estate and business services, and personal services. Other industries in Limpopo that  recorded gains include utilities (i.e. electricity and water); transport and communication; general government; manufacturing and trade. Provinces that recorded negative growth rates were Eastern Cape (-0,2%); North West (-0,1%); and Northern Cape (-0,1%). However, Gauteng remained the
largest contributor to the nominal GDP (contributing 33,2% to South Africa’ GDP), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (16,1%) and Western Cape (14,2%). Northern Cape contributed the least, at 2,2%.
