In South Africa, legally and traditionally, when a woman marries, she has the option of changing her maiden surname to that of her spouse, or she can choose to use a double-barrel surname by combining both surnames. However, for men, the same right does not apply, as it is not legally possible for a husband to assume his wife’s surname without first obtaining approval from the Department of Home Affairs.
