Stats SA Updates Census 2022 Municipal Profiles

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has updated and revised the Census 2022 Municipal Profiles following a comprehensive assessment of census themes, variables, and geographic layers. These updates enhance the depth and accuracy of the data available to the public, researchers, and policymakers.

Expanded Variables in SuperCROSS – Census 2022 Municipal Profiles

New variables, which were part of the Special District Layer release (see below), are now available on the Census 2022 Municipal Profiles.

Correction to Mpumalanga Municipal Data

An erratum has been issued for the population and household figures of Thaba Chweu and the City of Mbombela in Mpumalanga province. During the final phase of data assessment, discrepancies were identified in the figures published during phase 1 of the Census 2022 dissemination.

Stats SA Unveils Enhanced Census 2022 District Layer Product to Boost Planning and Service Delivery

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) released the Census 2022 Special District Layer Product, a powerful new tool designed to enhance the accessibility and usability of census data for planning, policymaking, and resource allocation.

This product introduces updated administrative and service provision district layers, including Police Districts, Education Districts, Magisterial Districts, and Health Districts. These layers provide a more granular view of demographic and socio-economic data, enabling stakeholders across government, academia, and civil society to make more informed decisions.

Key Highlights of the Product:

  • Comprehensive Coverage: The product includes 1,167 Police Districts86 Education Districts, 53 Magisterial Districts and 52 Health Districts across all nine provinces.
  • Rigorous Development Process: The product underwent meticulous planning, stakeholder engagement, spatial analysis, and quality assessments to ensure accuracy and alignment with official boundaries.
  • SuperCROSS Integration: Finalized data files were prepared using SuperCROSS software, ensuring consistency with Census 2022 published totals for persons and households.

Expanded Variables in SuperCROSS

New variables have been added to the Census unit records in SuperCROSS, enriching both person and household datasets:

  • Person-level additions include:
    • Province of birth
    • Main reason for moving
    • Disability status
    • Parental survival
    • Type of homeless location
    • Reasons for homelessness
  • Household-level additions include:
    • Household size
    • Adult hunger
    • Child hunger

New Profiles Available

Additional profiles have been introduced in SuperCROSS to provide more nuanced insights:

  • Parental survival
  • Homelessness
  • Household head information
  • Hunger

These additional variables are currently only available on the Census 2022 Special District Layer Product. They will be made available on the Census 2022 Municipality Profiles in due course.
