Keimoes is located on the northern bank of the Orange River. The name is of Khoikhoi origin, and means 'large eye' referring to a spring or fountain. The former minister of law and order, Adriaan Vlok (born 1937), started his career in the department of justice in both Keimoes and Upington, working in the magistrate offices there.
