Riebeeck East was named after Jan van Riebeeck (1619-1677), a Dutch colonial administrator and founder of the city of Cape Town. Riebeeck East was founded in 1842, on part of the farm Mooimeisjesfontein, forming around a Dutch Reformed Church that was established there in 1830. The original farm house of Voortrekker leader Piet Retief, which is now a National Heritage Site, can be found close by. (GPS coordinates: 33.2118 S, 26.1639 E).
