The results of the survey \u2013 containing detailed information on income, employment, capital expenditure, salaries and production \u2013 were recently published in two reports: <i>Manufacturing industry: Financial, 2014<\/i> and <i>Manufacturing industry: Production, 2014<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The following are a few interesting facts from the reports relating to the labour market:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact 1: 52% of the workforce resides in just three metros<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Over half of the manufacturing industry\u2019s national workforce is concentrated in just three metros: Johannesburg, Cape Town and eThekwini. The chart below shows the distribution of manufacturing\u2019s 1,19 million employees across 44 districts and 8 metropolitan areas. In 2014, 312\u00a0000 people (26% of the national total) were employed in Johannesburg. The average salary for an employee working in this group of enterprises was R265\u00a0871 per annum in 2014, far higher than the R69\u00a0443 for an employee working in textiles and clothing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manufacturing_p3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8437\" alt=\"manufacturing_p3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manufacturing_p3-300x209.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manufacturing_p3-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manufacturing_p3-1024x716.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manufacturing_p3-100x69.png 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/manufacturing_p3.png 1475w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Fact 4: Manufacturing lost 250\u00a0000 jobs over a ten-year period <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The number of people employed in the manufacturing industry has declined over the years, from 1,44 million in 2005 to 1,19 million in 2014. The job losses occurred across all manufacturing divisions with the exception of petroleum and chemicals, which created employment for 20\u00a0000 people.
