With mining recently under the spotlight, Stats SA\u2019s latest <i>Mining: Production and sales<\/i> release provides an overview of mining performance in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The mining industry performed better in 2015 than it did in 2014. Annual mining production was up by 3,5% in 2015, following a drop of 1,4% in 2014<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6249\" alt=\"Mining1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining1-300x179.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining1-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining1-1024x612.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining1-100x59.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining1.jpg 1406w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The four most important minerals to the South African mining industry are coal, gold, platinum group metals (PGMs) and iron ore. Together, the four contribute 80% to total mineral sales.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6250\" alt=\"Mining2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining2-291x300.jpg\" width=\"291\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining2-291x300.jpg 291w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining2-100x102.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining2.jpg 838w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Platinum<\/b><\/p>\n<p>PGMs were the main contributor to the 3,5% rise in overall mining production. Of the four major minerals, the PGM group was the only one to record a production increase in 2015. The low base created in 2014 by the PGM miners\u2019 strike saw PGMs performing strongly year-on-year in the first half of 2015, with production rising by 46,2% for the year as a whole.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6251\" alt=\"Mining3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining3-300x181.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining3-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining3-1024x617.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining3-100x60.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining3.jpg 1291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So is it really fair to celebrate such a large percentage increase when all we are doing is comparing with a year (2014) that recorded abnormally low production levels? Turning the clock back a little further, it might come as a surprise that 2015 was the best year on record for PGMs since 2011. Production in 2015 was 4,2% higher compared with 2013, and 8,3% higher compared with 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Iron ore<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Iron ore was the biggest loser in 2015, falling by 8,6%. South Africa\u2019s iron ore production plunged from 80,8 million tonnes in 2014 to 73 million tonnes in 2015 \u2013 hardly surprising in the context of weak demand and a 42% decrease in iron ore US dollar prices<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>South Africa is a major producer of iron ore, which is the key input for basic iron and steel manufactured products. The manufacturing of these products decreased by 7% in 2015<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6252\" alt=\"Mining4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining4-300x183.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining4-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining4-1024x625.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining4-100x61.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining4.jpg 1283w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Gold<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Gold production fell to 143\u00a0711 kg in 2015 compared with 151\u00a0622 kg mined the previous year. The seasonally adjusted production index decreased by 5,4% in 2015. Although the dollar price of gold decreased by 10,3% in 2015, the depreciation of the local currency saw the rand price of gold rising by 7,4% in 2015 (R474\u00a0090 per kg in 2015 compared with R441\u00a0246 per kg in 2014).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6253\" alt=\"Mining5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining5-300x182.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining5-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining5-1024x624.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining5-100x60.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining5.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Coal<\/b><\/p>\n<p>During the winter of 2015, coal production declined by 4,1% compared with 2014\u2019s winter, in correspondence with a 2,9% fall in national electricity generation and a 2,3% fall in electricity consumed<sup>4<\/sup>. For the entire year of 2015, seasonally adjusted coal production fell by 3,3%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6254\" alt=\"Mining6\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining6-300x181.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining6-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining6-1024x618.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining6-100x60.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Mining6.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mining industry remains an important player in South Africa, contributing 8% to the nation\u2019s economy<sup>5<\/sup> and employing 5% of the formal workforce<sup>6<\/sup>. It remains to be seen how the industry will perform in 2016.
