Income<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
The total income for the transport and storage industry in 2013 was R401,9 billion. The largest contributors to the total income was \u2018activities of other transport agencies\u2019 (R132,6 billion or 33%), and by \u2018freight transport by road\u2019 (R87,9 billion or 22%).<\/p>\n
The total income represents an increase of 10,7% per annum over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (R296,0 billion).\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
Employment<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
The total number of persons employed in the transport and storage industry at the end of June 2013 was 299\u00a0850. \u2018Freight transport by road\u2019 had the largest number of employees (93\u00a0279 or 31%), followed by \u2018railway transport\u2019 (55\u00a0910 or 19%) and \u2018activities of other transport agencies\u2019 (28\u00a0903 or 10.<\/p>\n
The total number of persons employed represents a decrease of 1,0% per annum over the number of persons employed reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (308\u00a0742).\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 27%. The industry with the highest proportion of females employed was \u2018travel agencies and related activities\u2019 (69%), whilst \u2018freight transport by road\u2019 had the highest proportion of males employed (85%).<\/p>\n
Railway freight transport<\/b><\/p>\n
The total income from services for railway freight in 2013 was R30,6 billion. The largest income from services by type of freight was for \u2018coal\u2019 R12,1 billion or 39,6%, \u2018mineral products\u2019 R7,1 billion or 23,2% and \u2018mineral ore\u2019 R5,3 billion or 17,2%.<\/p>\n
The total income from services for railway freight represents an increase of 15,6% per annum over the value (R19,8 billion) reported in the corresponding survey of 2010.<\/p>\n
Road freight transport<\/b><\/p>\n
The total income from services for road freight in 2013 was R74,7 billion. The largest income from services by type of freight was for \u2018break bulk\/cargo transported as a unit or packaged\u2019 R31,7 billion or 42,4%, \u2018other dry bulk\/unpackaged cargo e.g. timber\u2019 R8,8 billion or 23,2%, \u2018liquids\u2019 R5,9\u00a0billion or 7,9%, \u2018containerised freight\u2019 R5,7\u00a0billion or 7,7% and \u2018dry\u00a0bulk\/unpackaged\u00a0cargo, coal\u2019 R5,7 billion or 7,6%.<\/p>\n
The total income from services for road freight represents an increase of 10,8% per annum over the value (R55,0 billion) reported in the corresponding survey of 2010.<\/p>\n
