The largest contributor to the total income was \u2018generation, transmission and distribution of electricity\u2019 (R150,2 million or 82,8%), followed by \u2018collection, purification and distribution of water\u2019 (R22,1 billion or 12,2%) and \u2018manufacturing and distribution of gaseous fuels through mains\u2019 (R9,1 billion or 5,0%).<\/p>\n<p>The total income represents an increase of 19,1% per annum over the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (R107,2 billion).<\/p>\n<p><b>Employment<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The total number of persons employed in the electricity, gas and water supply industry at the end of June 2013 was 57\u00a0573. \u2018Generation, transmission and distribution of electricity\u2019 employed the largest number of persons (45\u00a0205 or 78,5%), followed by \u2018collection, purification and distribution of water\u2019 (11\u00a0936 or 20,7%) and \u2018manufacturing and distribution of gaseous fuels through mains\u2019 (432 or 0,8%).<\/p>\n<p>Employment in the electricity, gas and water supply industry increased by 4,0% per annum compared with the number of employees reported in the corresponding survey of 2010 (51\u00a0237).<\/p>\n<p>The proportion of females out of the total persons employed was 30,4%. The sector with the highest proportion of females employed was \u2018generation, transmission and distribution of electricity\u2019 (31,7%), whilst \u2018manufacturing and distribution of gaseous fuels through mains\u2019 had the highest proportion of males employed (79,4%).<\/p>\n<p><b>Electricity generated<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Total electricity generated in the electricity, gas and water supply industry in 2013 was 236\u00a0760 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The largest source of electricity generation was \u2018coal\u2019 (215\u00a0154 GWh or 90,9%), followed by \u2018nuclear\u2019 (11\u00a0954 GWh or 5,0%).<\/p>\n<p>The total electricity generated decreased by 0,4% per annum compared with the corresponding survey of 2010 (239\u00a0474 GWh).<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Gas<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The total quantity of gas distributed in the electricity, gas and water supply industry in 2013 was 170,2 million gigajoules (GJ).
