Stats SA recently released estimates on the amount of energy, mineral and fishery resources available in South Africa, and the extent to which these are being consumed.<\/p>\n<p>The following are three interesting observations from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/publications\/Report-04-05-20\/Report-04-05-202015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2015 <i>Environmental Economic Accounts Compendium<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Coal as the main source of energy for South Africa<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Coal continues to be the primary source for South Africa\u2019s energy supply. Figures from 2010 show that 67% of South Africa\u2019s energy supply was from coal, followed by crude oil (15%) and petroleum products (14%). Nuclear power provided 2% of South Africa\u2019s energy supply.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Energy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4344 aligncenter\" alt=\"Energy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Energy.png\" width=\"706\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Energy.png 1277w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Energy-300x219.png 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Energy-1024x749.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Energy-100x73.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Platinum group metals set to outlive both coal and gold <\/b><\/p>\n<p>At current production levels, South Africa will exhaust its proven platinum group metal (PGM) reserves in 248 years, coal in 116 years, and gold in 39 years. Stats SA has previously highlighted the declining role of the gold mining industry in South Africa<sup>1<\/sup>.There are an estimated 6\u00a0000 tons of proven gold reserves remaining. Proven PGM reserves are sitting at an estimated 63\u00a0000 tons, and coal at 30\u00a0156 million tons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Platinum.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4343 aligncenter\" alt=\"Platinum\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Platinum.png\" width=\"736\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Platinum.png 1559w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Platinum-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Platinum-1024x630.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Platinum-100x61.png 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Abalone: measuring a scarce resource<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Commercial harvesting of abalone was banned in February 2008 in an attempt to curb rapidly decreasing stocks. Named \u2018perlemoen\u2019 by locals, the rapid disappearance of the once abundant shellfish was largely blamed on rampant illegal fishing. Commercial harvesting was later reinstated in July 2010 on a limited basis.<\/p>\n<p>Measuring the stocks and depletion rates of scarce resources is important to ensure the drafting of effective environmental management policies. The closing stock for abalone decreased from 6\u00a0096 tons in 2003 to 3\u00a0364 tons in 2012, a drop of 44,8% over the ten-year period.
