This was one of the findings from the latest <i>Quarterly Financial Statistics of Municipalities (QFSM)<\/i> report, released on the 29<sup>th<\/sup> September. Other contributors to municipal income were grants and subsidies (R14,9 billion or 21,8%); property rates (R11,4 billion or 16,7%); other income (R10,5 billion or 15,4%); sales of water (R6,7 billion or 9,8%); sewerage and sanitation (R2,7 billion or 4,0%); and refuse removal (R1,9 billion or 2,8%).<\/p>\n<p>The R20,2 billion from sales of electricity was R1,3 billion higher than the amount received in the previous quarter (R18,9 billion), an increase of 6,9%. The municipalities that contributed the most to the R20,2 billion were from Gauteng (contributing R8,5 billion or 42%), followed by those in KwaZulu-Natal (R3,6 billion or 18%) and Western Cape (R3,4 billion or 17%).<\/p>\n<p>Municipalities received R14,9 billion in the form of grants and subsidies from provincial and national government, a decrease of R3,4 billion from R18,3 billion recorded in the previous quarter. The largest portion of the R14,9 billion went to municipalities in Gauteng (R5,5 billion or 37%), followed by those in KwaZulu-Natal (R2,7 billion or 18%), Western Cape (R1,8 billion or 12%), and Eastern Cape (R1,5 billion or 10%). The province with the lowest share of grants and subsidies received was Northern Cape (R0,1 billion or 1%).<\/p>\n<p>Employee related costs amounted to R17,0 billion. This was an increase of R0,7 billion (4,3%) from the R16,3 billion recorded in the previous quarter. Municipalities in Gauteng contributed the most to employee costs (R5,6 billion or 32,8%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (R2,9 billion or 16,7%), Western Cape (R2,8 billion or 16,5%) and Eastern Cape (R1,7 billion or 9,9%).
