After 20\u00a0years of democracy and freedom, women still endeavour to eradicate\u00a0traditional practices such as forced marriages where a woman is forced to\u00a0marry her deceased husband\u2019s brother as culture, ukuthwala (practice of\u00a0abducting young girls and forcing them into marriage) perpetuated by men,<br \/>\nworkplace inequalities such as employers preferring males in senior\u00a0positions and gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<p>Government has made progress over the years to ensure that the gender\u00a0gap is bridged. The number of women ministers and deputy ministers has\u00a0doubled from 18% in 1994 to 40% in 2010, about 36% occupy senior-level\u00a0jobs in government, and up to 44% members of the legislature on a national\u00a0and provincial level are women. More laws to fight gender-based violence\u00a0were also introduced.<\/p>\n<p>In this issue of Mbalo Brief, we highlight our series of Census 2011\u00a0educational articles focusing on Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The\u00a0article features, among other things, the information about population\u00a0growth, the unemployment rate, access to basic services and toilet facilities.\u00a0Solutions for July\u2019s puzzle and a new general knowledge crossword puzzle\u00a0are included on page iv.
