{"id":2413,"date":"2014-02-21T15:58:50","date_gmt":"2014-02-21T13:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beta2.statssa.gov.za\/?p=2413"},"modified":"2014-02-21T15:58:50","modified_gmt":"2014-02-21T13:58:50","slug":"new-statistics-council-inaugurated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=2413","title":{"rendered":"New Statistics Council inaugurated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new SA Statistics Council, which was appointed from 1 July 2013, for a term of three years, was officially inaugurated by Mr Trevor Manuel, Minister in the Presidency responsible for National Planning, at a meeting in\u00a0Ekurhuleni on 7 February 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The Statistics Council is appointed in terms of the Statistics Act (6 of 1999). The role of the council is to advise the Minister and the Statistician-General on any issue concerned with the production and use of official statistics. This includes:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strategic advice on statistical policy and priorities<\/li>\n<li>Technical advice, in general or on specific statistical data collections and methodological issues<\/li>\n<li>Coordination of statistical activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Minister appointed Mr Morore Ben Mphahlele as the Chairperson, as he has served on the two previous Councils and provides continuity.<\/p>\n<p>There are 23 members from around the country representing the statistical interests of provinces,\u00a0organs of state, business and research.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><i>STATISTICS COUNCIL 2013 <\/i><\/h3>\n<p>Members re-appointed as national members<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Ian Assam<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Assam holds BA Hons (Public Admin) and BA Hons (Ind Psych) degrees.\u00a0 He is the DDG of Strategic Co-ordination in the Dept Education, Eastern Cape.\u00a0 His areas of expertise are strategic planning, governance, policy development, monitoring, reporting and evaluation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Faldie Esau<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Esau holds a BA and a Diploma in Datametrics.\u00a0 He is a Research Associate at SALDRU.\u00a0 His areas of expertise are production of statistics, labour markets and poverty research.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prof Jacky Galpin<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prof Galpin holds a DSc (Mathematical Statistics).\u00a0 She is an Associate Professor: School of Statistics and Actuarial Science, Wits.\u00a0 Her areas of expertise are sampling, methodology and official statistics.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prof Maseka Lesaoana<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prof Lesaoana holds a PhD (Operational Research).\u00a0 She is the Director: School of Mathematical and Computer Sciencess, UL.\u00a0 Her areas of expertise are operational research and statistical analysis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Morore Mphahlele (Chairperson)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Mphahlele holds a MBA.\u00a0 He is a consultant.\u00a0 His areas of expertise are economic development, finance and strategy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dr Khangelani Zuma<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Zuma holds a PhD (Statistics). He is the Research Director and Head of Biostatistics at the HSRC.\u00a0 His areas of expertise are sampling, methodology and statistics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>New national members<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Kenneth Brown<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Brown holds a M (Economics). He is the Chief Procurement Officer: National Treasury. His area of expertise is provincial and local government finance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prof Philippe Burger<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prof Burger holds a PhD (Economics).\u00a0 He is Head of the Economics Department at the University of the Free State. His area of expertise is economics.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dr Rashad Cassim<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Cassim holds a PhD (Economics).\u00a0 He is the Head of Research at the SA Reserve Bank. His areas of expertise are economic research and trade policy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dr Jaya Josie<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Josie holds a PhD (Public Finance and Administration).\u00a0 He is the Senior Research Manager in the Economics Performance and Development Programme, HSRC.\u00a0 His area of expertise is economic development.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Ettienne le Roux<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Le Roux holds a MCom (Economics).\u00a0 He is Chief Economist at Rand Merchant Bank.\u00a0 His area of expertise is economics.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prof John Luiz<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prof Luiz holds a PhD (Economics).\u00a0 He is a professor at the UCT Graduate School of Business.\u00a0 His area of expertise is economic research.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prof Julian May<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prof May holds a PhD (Development Studies).\u00a0 He is the Director: Institute for Social Development, UWC.\u00a0 His areas of expertise are demography and poverty measurement.\u00a0 Prof May previously served two terms on Council.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dr Ariane Neethling<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr Neethling holds a PhD (Statistics).\u00a0 She is a statistical consultant and part time lecturer.\u00a0 Her areas of expertise are sampling, methodology and analysis of survey data.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prof Sarah Radloff<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prof Radloff holds a PhD (Applied Statistics).\u00a0 She is a professor at Rhodes University.\u00a0 Her areas of expertise are analysis, econometrics and modelling.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Sulaiman Salau<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Salau holds a MSc (Mathematical Statistics).\u00a0 He is a lecturer at the Wits School of Statistics and Actuarial Science.\u00a0 His areas of expertise are statistical theory and application.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Provincial representatives<\/h3>\n<p>Free State<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prof Daniel Plaatjies<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prof Plaatjies holds a PhD (Management, Administration &amp; Policy). He is the Head of M&amp;E: Office of the Premier.\u00a0 He is currently seconded to the DPSA. His areas of expertise are public policy, public finance and governance.<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Cape<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Monde Nkasawe<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Nkasawe holds a MM (Public Development and Management). He is the General Manager: Cabinet Support and Protocol Services in the Office of the Premier.\u00a0 His area of expertise is policy development.<\/p>\n<p>KwaZulu-Natal<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Glen Robbins<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Robbins holds a MPhil (Development Studies). He is a consultant and lecturer at UKZN.\u00a0 He is also a Commissioner on the KZN Planning Commission. His area of expertise is economic development research.<\/p>\n<p>Western Cape<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ms Zeenat Ishmail<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ms Ishmail holds a MSc (Project Management).\u00a0 She is the Chief Director: Strategic Management Information in the Department of the Premier, Western Cape.\u00a0 Her areas of expertise are programme and project performance, results-based monitoring and evaluation systems and spatial information.<\/p>\n<p>Mpumalanga<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mr Mveli Maphanga<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Mr Maphanga holds a BSc and a diploma in advanced business management.\u00a0 He is an Area Sales Manager for HemoCue SA.\u00a0 His areas of expertise are marketing and sales, with an interest in research.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Cape<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ms Lizell Henney<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ms Henney holds a BSc(Mathematical Science) and a Certificate in Applied Population Sciences Research and Training.\u00a0 She is the Manager: Data Analysis in the Dept Social and Population Development, NC.\u00a0 Her areas of expertise are statistics, data analysis and research.<\/p>\n<p>Gauteng<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prof David Everatt<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prof Everatt holds a PhD (Modern History).\u00a0 He is the Executive Director of the Gauteng City-Region Observatory. He is also a Professor, Graduate School of Public and Development Management, and Honorary Professor, School of Architecture and Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand.
