The latest economic figures cover the month of February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On the upside<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most indicators were positive year-on-year. Mining; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P5041.1&amp;SCH=74280\">construction (buildings completed as reported by large municipalities)<\/a>; retail trade sales; motor trade sales; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P6410&amp;SCH=74281\">tourist accommodation<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P6420&amp;SCH=74285\">restaurants, catering &amp; fast-food<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P7162&amp;SCH=74283\">rail transport (both freight and passenger)<\/a> recorded a positive February (see Figure&nbsp;1 below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Figure_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Figure_01-1024x840.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Figure_01-1024x840.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Figure_01-300x246.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Figure_01-768x630.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Figure_01-1536x1260.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Figure_01-2048x1679.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Figure_01-100x82.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>South African <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P2041&amp;SCH=74276\">mining output<\/a> expanded by 9,7% year-on-year. Platinum group metals led the increase, growing by 52,3% and contributing 9,4 percentage points to overall growth. Nickel, chromium ore, manganese ore, diamonds and gold were also positive. However, there was a decline in the production of coal, iron ore and copper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P6242.1&amp;SCH=74277\">Retail trade sales<\/a> remained upbeat, growing by 1,6% year-on-year in February. Five of the seven retail groups were stronger, with the miscellaneous category, all \u2018other\u2019 retailers, the most significant positive contributor. This category \u2013 which includes online stores and retailers specialising in jewellery, stationery and sports goods \u2013 grew by 9,4%, contributing 1&nbsp;percentage point to the overall growth. The textiles &amp; clothing category was the second largest positive contributor, rising by 3,9% and contributing 0,6 of a percentage point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all was positive on the retail front, however. General dealers and retailers specialising in food &amp; beverages recorded a decline. Food &amp; beverages registered the largest decrease, shrinking by 5,0%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P6343.2&amp;SCH=74282\">Motor trade sales<\/a> continued its positive year-on-year run, rising by 5,5%. New vehicle sales drove most of the upward momentum, expanding by 17,4%; the 12<sup>th<\/sup> consecutive month of growth since March 2025. Used vehicle sales and sales of accessories were also positive. Fuel sales, convenience store sales and workshop income declined over the period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On the downside<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturing, electricity generation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P6141.2&amp;SCH=74279\">wholesale trade sales<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P7162&amp;SCH=74283\">road transport (both freight and passenger)<\/a> were negative in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P3041.2&amp;SCH=74275\">Manufacturing activity<\/a> cooled by 2,8% year-on-year. Seven of the ten manufacturing divisions were weaker, with food &amp; beverages; wood, paper, publishing &amp; printing; and metals &amp; machinery the largest drags on overall growth. Three divisions were positive, including glass &amp; non-metallic mineral products; electrical machinery; and petroleum, chemical products, rubber &amp; plastic products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P4141&amp;SCH=74274\">Electricity generation<\/a> declined by 4,0%. On the provincial front, the volume of electricity delivered to provinces receded by 4,2%, with seven of the nine provinces registering a decline. Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal recorded increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to look forward to in May<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the monthly electricity release, Stats SA will publish a detailed statistical report on the electricity, gas &amp; water supply industry in May. The report, which will be published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1866&amp;PPN=Report-41-01-02&amp;SCH=7361\">here<\/a> on 7 May, will provide an overview of income, expenditure, employment and production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of April\u2019s fuel price increases on inflation will be revealed in the next Consumer Price Index (CPI) statistical release, to be published on 20 May.
