{"id":19259,"date":"2026-03-04T11:22:58","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T09:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=19259"},"modified":"2026-03-04T11:31:47","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T09:31:47","slug":"economic-wrap-up-for-february-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=19259","title":{"rendered":"Economic wrap-up for February 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The latest round of monthly business cycle indicators concludes the results for 2025, providing a preliminary snapshot of economic performance in the fourth quarter of 2025 and for the calendar year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The year was generally positive, according to selected indicators shown in Figure&nbsp;1 below. Many indicators were stronger, with decreases recorded for manufacturing, electricity generation, wholesale trade sales and road freight transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Figure01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Figure01-1024x840.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19260\" style=\"width:339px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Figure01-1024x840.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Figure01-300x246.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Figure01-768x630.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Figure01-1536x1260.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Figure01-2048x1679.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Figure01-100x82.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P3041.2&amp;SCH=74197\">Manufacturing output<\/a> retreated by 1,3% in 2025 compared with 2024, representing the second consecutive year of decline. Nine of the ten manufacturing divisions were weaker in 2025. The wood, paper, printing &amp; publishing and iron &amp; steel, metal products &amp; machinery divisions were the most significant negative contributors. Together, they pulled overall growth down by 0,6 percentage points. Textiles &amp; clothing was the only manufacturing division that experienced a positive year, expanding by 0,7%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The country <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P4141&amp;SCH=74202\">produced less electricity<\/a> in 2025, with generation declining by 2,0%. This followed a 4,9% rise in 2024. The second half of 2025 was particularly downbeat. Electricity generation decreased by 1,4% month-on-month in December&nbsp;2025, representing a fifth straight month of decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P6141.2&amp;SCH=74233\">Wholesale trade sales<\/a> registered its fourth consecutive year of negative growth, weakening by 1,4% in 2025. Adjusted for inflation, total wholesale trade sales amounted to R2,45&nbsp;trillion in the year, down from its recent peak of R2,71&nbsp;trillion in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the upside, consumer spending was positive for a second straight year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P6242.1&amp;SCH=74194\">Retail trade sales<\/a> expanded by 3,7%, following a 2,5% rise in 2024. Six of the seven retail groups recorded a positive 2025, with general dealers and textiles &amp; clothing the most significant positive contributors. Retailers in food and beverages experienced a decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P2041&amp;SCH=74198\">Mining production<\/a> grew by a marginal 0,1%, following a 0,5% increase in 2024. There was a rise in the production of manganese ore, diamonds, chromium ore, iron ore and nickel. However, the industry produced less copper, platinum-group metals, gold and coal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P6343.2&amp;SCH=74188\">Motor trade sales<\/a> posted a positive 2025 after two consecutive years of decline, expanding by 2,0%. The positive momentum was driven mainly by stronger new vehicle sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shifting focus to the fourth quarter of 2025, decreases were recorded for mining, manufacturing, electricity generation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?page_id=1854&amp;PPN=P7162&amp;SCH=74171\">road freight transport, rail passenger transport and road passenger transport<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next gross domestic product (GDP) estimates will provide a more comprehensive overview of economic performance for the fourth quarter and for 2025.
