Average annual inflation for 2022 was 6,9%, higher than the 4,5% recorded for 2021. The 2022 reading is the highest annual average rate since 2009 (7,1%) \u2014 the end of the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cpidec2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-16055\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cpidec2-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"cpidec2\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cpidec2-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cpidec2-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cpidec2-1024x690.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/cpidec2-100x67.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bread and cereal prices continue to drive food inflation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CPI excluding food &amp; non-alcoholic beverages (NAB) and fuel was 5,1% (year-on-year) in December 2022, unchanged from November. This is much lower than the headline rate, illustrating the impact of these two categories on overall inflation. The CPI for non-durable goods (items purchased more frequently) decreased from 12,2% in November to 11,7% in December.<\/p>\n<p>Prices for food &amp; NAB products increased on average by 12,4% over the past 12 months. Bread and cereal products have had the most significant impact on overall food inflation, with the annual rate reaching 20,6% in December. This is markedly higher than the low of 1,5% recorded in January 2022. In fact, December\u2019s reading is the highest since February 2009 (23,8%).<\/p>\n<p>Maize meal prices rose by 33,7% in the 12 months to December, with a monthly increase of 1,9%. The index for rice increased by 1,3% between November and December, taking its annual rate to 7,8%.<\/p>\n<p>Meat inflation slowed to 9,7% in December from 10,5% in November.<\/p>\n<p>Oils and fats inflation cooled for the fourth consecutive month, declining to 22,4% in December.<\/p>\n<p>The annual rate for hot beverages accelerated to 14,6% from 13,9% in November. Prices for instant coffee leapt by 22,9% and cappuccino sachets by 12,3% in the 12 months to December.<\/p>\n<p>Prices of alcoholic beverages decreased by 0,3% between November and December, dragging the annual rate for the alcoholic beverages &amp; tobacco category to 6,2% from 6,5% in November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annual transport inflation softens for a fifth consecutive month<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Transport inflation dipped to 13,9% in December from 15,3% in November. The annual rate for fuel was 22,8%, down from 25,3% in November and much lower than the high of 56,2% registered in July. Fuel inflation has been in double digit territory since April 2021 and above 20% since October 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Annual vehicle inflation rose to 6,7%, its highest level since February 2017 (8,2%). Used vehicle prices registered an annual increase of 16,0% \u2014 the highest since the current CPI series began in 2008. New vehicles were 5,9% more expensive in December 2022 compared with December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Public transport prices increased by 16,7% over the year, and 0,1% from November. Long distance bus fares were up by 30,2% in the month (a seasonal effect) and up by 26,2% in the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other notable price changes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inflation for housing rents cooled between the third and fourth quarters of 2022, for both actual rentals (from 2,8% to 2,5%) and owners\u2019 equivalent rent (from 3,2% to 2,8%).<\/p>\n<p>Annual inflation for personal care items climbed to 9,2% in December from 9,0% in November.
