Approximately 57 years ago, on 9 August 1956, more than 20 000 heroines took it upon themselves to challenge those who were imposing racist and unjust laws upon them.\u00a0 Women of all races joined forces under the leadership of Lillian Ngoyi, Rahima Moosa, Helen Joseph, Sophia de Bruyn, Frances Baard, Bertha Gxowa and Albertina Sisulu and\u00a0 marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to deliver petitions against amendments to the Urban Areas Act to the then prime minister J.G Strijdom. These amendments to the\u00a0 Act were meant to force woman to carry their passes when in urban areas.<\/p>\n
In this issue of Mbalo Brief, we continue with the dissemination of Census 2011 results \u2013 this time focusing on KwaZulu-Natal. We look at the province\u2019s population growth in\u00a0 2011 in comparison to 1996 and 2001, the unemployment rate, access to housing and basic services, among others.<\/p>\n

You can also expect to be informed of the performance of various\u00a0 industries in our economy, including land transport, tourist accommodation, manufacturing, and mining, among others. As usual, as an indicator of the cost of living in the\u00a0 country, articles on both producer and consumer price indices of the country are included in this issue.<\/p>\n
Articles published in this issue are based on results of industry surveys conducted for the months ranging from April to June 2013 which were released in June and July 2013.<\/p>\n
