{"id":12842,"date":"2019-12-12T09:17:59","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T07:17:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=12842"},"modified":"2019-12-12T12:31:13","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T10:31:13","slug":"28-000-jobs-lost-in-sa-formal-sector-third-quarter-of-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/?p=12842","title":{"rendered":"28 000 jobs lost in SA formal sector third quarter of 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Formal sector employment decreased by 28\u00a0000 in September 2019, with 11\u00a0000 full-time and 17\u00a0000 part-time jobs shed during the quarter.<br \/>\nThe September 2019 Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) survey showed that an estimated 10\u00a0142\u00a0000 people were employed in the formal non-agricultural sector of the South African economy, which is down by 28\u00a0000 from 10\u00a0170\u00a0000 in the previous quarter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"data1\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data1-100x56.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data1.jpg 1601w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The quarterly decrease in total employment was driven by job losses in construction (-12\u00a0000); manufacturing (-12\u00a0000); community services (-11\u00a0000); business services (-9\u00a0000); and transport (-1\u00a0000). The electricity and mining industries were unchanged in September.<\/p>\n<p>The only industry to record a quarterly increase was trade, up by 17\u00a0000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Total employment increased by 78\u00a0000 between September 2018 and September 2019, with 45\u00a0000 full-time and 33\u00a0000 part-time jobs added. This increase was largely due to job increases in community services (54\u00a0000); trade (53\u00a0000); business services (28\u00a0000); and mining (6\u00a0000).<\/p>\n<p>Annual job losses were reported by construction (-37\u00a0000); manufacturing (-22\u00a0000); electricity (-3\u00a0000); and transport (-1\u00a0000).<\/p>\n<p>Total earnings paid to employees amounted to R711,2 billion in September 2019, up from R699,5 billion in June 2019, a quarterly increase of 1,7%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-12845\" src=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data2-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"data2\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data2-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data2-768x524.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data2-1024x698.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data2-100x68.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.statssa.gov.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/data2.jpg 1106w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the quarter ending September 2019, basic salary payments increased by 1,4% and bonus and overtime payments increased by 4,2%.<\/p>\n<p>Quarter-on-quarter increases in gross earnings were led by the business services industry with R6,5 billion, community industry with R3,8 billion, mining industry with R2,3 billion, manufacturing industry with<br \/>\nR926 million, trade industry with R628 million, and electricity industry with R130 million.
