I<\/span>t<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0all systems go a<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Stati<\/span>sti<\/span>cian<\/span>–<\/span>General<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and head of Statistics South Africa (Stats SA)<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Mr\u00a0<\/span>Risenga Malulek<\/span>e<\/span>, this morning<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>led a delegation of Stats SA fieldworkers to collect data at a farm in Bapsfontein in the East Rand<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>the C<\/span>ensus of\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>ommercial\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>griculture<\/span>\u00a0(CoCA)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>About 600 <\/span>fieldworkers wearing Stats SA branded gear, across the coun<\/span>try\u00a0<\/span>are currently<\/span>\u00a0collect<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0data from farmers in order to\u00a0<\/span>count the number of commercial farmers, size of farms, variety of crops in different geographic areas, and irrigation usage among other variables.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This data<\/span>\u00a0will assist to measure commercial farming output as well as to determine the types of farming and identify challenges in the sector. This will also measure the level of employment in the agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCoCA will assist the country to measure the level of food security in the country and also guide investment<\/span>\u00a0and planning\u00a0<\/span>in the agriculture sector. South Africa has a long history o<\/span>f conducting\u00a0<\/span>these censuses<\/span>, with the first one conducted in 1918 and the results published in 1919.\u00a0<\/span>This is the third CoCA in post-apartheid South Africa with the first\u00a0<\/span>conducted\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>2002\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>another one in\u00a0<\/span>2007<\/span>\u201d, said Maluleke.<\/span><\/p>\n

The farm visit was preceded by a briefing at the Welbekend police station where\u00a0<\/span>Maluleke briefed the station commander and alerted police<\/span>\u00a0about the presence of Stats SA fieldworkers in the area from 15<\/span>th\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>October to June 2019.\u00a0<\/span>In welcoming<\/span>\u00a0the Stats\u00a0<\/span>SA<\/span>\u00a0delegation<\/span>, the famer\u00a0<\/span>poi<\/span>n<\/span>ted out that\u00a0<\/span>he has been responding to Stats SA questionnaire<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0as he strongly believes that\u00a0<\/span>the data is needed to aid management<\/span>\u00a0of commercial farming<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>We have been providing food to the\u00a0<\/span>South African\u00a0<\/span>population for many years and farming is important to ensure that we are able to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>meet the demands of the growing population. There is nothing sinister about the cen<\/span>s<\/span>us as it will provide much needed data in the sector<\/span>\u201d<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0said the farmer<\/span>\u00a0who also indicated that he has been farming for the past 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United Nations body, Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) recommends that country<\/span>\u2019s conduct a census of commercial agriculture every ten years. The agricultural census will cover commercial farmers, which are farms producing for income or profit<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Statistics Act (Act No. 6 of 1999<\/span>)\u00a0<\/span>compels Stats SA to\u00a0<\/span>maintain confidentiality of data collected through any form of survey conducted by the organisation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>information provided i<\/span>s strictly confidential and the results\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>to be presented in aggregate form only<\/span>, which\u00a0<\/span>is also in line with Principle 6 of the United Nations (UN) Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics.<\/span><\/p>\n
