As a leading statistical agency, Stats SA is transitioning from traditional Paper Assisted Personal Interviews (PAPI) to Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI), in line with our strategic goal of implementing a more agile operating model.

CAWIS enables respondents to complete surveys online and has built-in data validation capabilities, improving data accuracy, timeliness, and security, while also enhancing efficiency and reducing operational costs. The objective of this project is to develop a robust CAWIS that streamlines data collection and improves respondent engagement.

Piloting the newly developed CAWIS data collection tool is a critical quality assurance step before its broader implementation. The pilot allows for the testing of system functionality, questionnaire flow, data validation controls, and overall user experience under real-world conditions. It helps identify and address any technical, operational, or usability challenges that could affect data collection processes.

By evaluating the tool with actual users, the pilot provides valuable insights that support improvements to performance, reliability, and data quality. It also helps mitigate implementation risks, enhances stakeholder confidence, and ensures that the solution is fit for purpose before being rolled out on a larger scale. Ultimately, piloting contributes to a more efficient, effective, and successful deployment of the CAWI platform.

As the Pilot is primarily designed to test the CAWIS, rather than to collect data, respondents selected for the Pilot Survey will need to complete the PAPI questionnaire as well.

Quick fact

Respondents from the Quality Improvement Survey (QIS), Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES), and Quarterly Financial Statistics (QFS) will be invited to participate in the CAWIS Pilot.

Need help?

Call centre: 0800 110 248

CAWIS@statssa.gov.za

Statistics South Africa is embarking on an exciting project to modernise our data collection processes through a digital platform called the Computer Assisted Web Interview System (CAWIS).
