Key findings regarding mining production for January 2017

Mining production increased by 1,3% year-on-year in January 2017. The two main positive contributors were manganese ore (20,0% and contributing 1,2 percentage points) and iron ore (7,3% and contributing 1,2 percentage points). Coal (-5,5% and contributing -1,6 percentage points) was a significant negative contributor.

Seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 1,7% in January 2017 compared with December 2016. This followed month-on-month changes of -0,3% in December 2016 and -4,7% in November 2016.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 5,2% in the three months ended January 2017 compared with the previous three months. PGMs (contributing -2,0 percentage points) and iron ore (contributing -1,9 percentage points) were the largest negative contributors.

Key findings regarding mineral sales for December 2016

Mineral sales increased by 23,0% year-on-year in December 2016. The largest positive contributors to the increase of 23,0% were:
manganese ore (317,7% and contributing 8,8 percentage points);

  • chromium ore (195,5% and contributing 6,4 percentage points);
  • iron ore (64,7% and contributing 5,8 percentage points); and
  • coal (13,9% and contributing 3,9 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 1,5% in December 2016 compared with November 2016. This followed month-on-month changes of 7,6% in November 2016 and 1,5% in October 2016.
