Continuous Population Survey – Household Survey Programme Redesign (CPS-HSPR) Frame Update

Stats SA is reengineering its survey programmes through the CPS-HSPR Project to make it more responsive to user needs. Phase one of this reengineering process includes updating the Master Sample, which is the geographic frame used to do sample selection when household surveys are conducted.

It is important that the Master Sample be updated regularly to:

  • reflect changes on the ground (e.g. new housing units)
  • reflect current population structure and distribution
  • minimise undercoverage (missing eligible units) and overcoverage (including ineligible or duplicated units)
  • optimize sample design, thereby reducing costs and increasing efficiency
  • improve the quality of the statistics produced

Stats SA will be deploying fieldworkers across the country, in all provinces and district municipalities, to collect the information needed to update the Master Sample. Fieldworkers will contact households to collect information on structures within the yard and gather more information (if needed) on the living arrangements and usage of the different structures.

During this process contact details for every main dwelling will be recorded. These contact details include the name, surname and contact number of the person providing the information.

Legally, Section 17 of the Statistics Act No. 06 of 1999 guarantees the confidentiality of your information, and Section 18 deals with the penalties that will be imposed on a Stats SA official who divulges any official information not authorised to do so. The data we collect is used for statistical purposes only and no-one can access any data we collect from your household on an individual level.

Our field staff can be easily identified through the Stats SA ID cards, Stats SA caps and Stats SA bibs they will be wearing. If you want to confirm that the person at your door really is a Stats SA official, you can click here to access our online Fieldworker Verification Tool or call 0800 110 248 (tollfree). The contact details for our provincial offices are listed on the pamphlet below.
