Findings from the migration module attached to the 2022/3 Income and Expenditure Survey indicate that immigrants made up 5,1% of South Africa’s population, with males (56,2%) outnumbering females (43,8%). Most immigrants were black African (83,8%) with average age about 25–26 years. The SADC region accounted for 63,6% of immigrants in South Africa, mainly settled in Gauteng (51,2%) and the Western Cape (13,3%), with high concentrations in the City of Johannesburg (27%), Ekurhuleni (12%), and Cape Town metro (9,2%). The most common inter-provincial migration streams since November 2017 (Period migration) were Limpopo to Gauteng (13,4%) and KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng (7,2%), citing employment and economic opportunities as main reasons for internal migration.
