Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 3,4% in May 2026 compared with May 2025. The corresponding income increased by 9,3% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 8,6% in the three months ended May 2026 compared with the three months ended May 2025. The main positive contributors to this increase were:

·      ‘other’ freight (12,0% and contributing 2,7 percentage points);

·      agriculture and forestry primary products (26,4% and contributing 2,0 percentage points); and

·      containers (45,8% and contributing 1,3 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 4,2% in the three months ended May 2026 compared with the previous three months. Road freight increased by 5,7% (contributing 4,8 percentage points), while rail freight decreased by 3,6% (contributing -0,6 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys increased by 4,0% in May 2026 compared with May 2025. The corresponding income increased by 4,3% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 3,7% in the three months ended May 2026 compared with the previous three months. Road passenger journeys increased by 2,9% (contributing 2,0 percentage points) and rail passenger journeys increased by 5,7% (contributing 1,7 percentage points).
