Key findings: P7162 - Land transport survey, May 2025

Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload)  decreased by 3,7% in May 2025 compared with May 2024. The corresponding income decreased by 0,4% over the same period.

 

Income from freight transportation decreased by 0,9% in the three months ended May 2025 compared with the three months ended May 2024. The main negative contributors to this decrease were:

·      agriculture and forestry primary products (-17,7% and contributing -1,0 percentage point); and

·      containers (-10,2% and contributing -0,6 of a percentage point).


Seasonally adjusted payload decreased by 1,2% in the three months ended May 2025 compared with the previous three months. Road freight decreased by 1,5% (contributing -1,2 percentage points), while rail freight increased by 0,3% (contributing 0,1 of a percentage point).

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys increased by 8,7% in May 2025 compared with May 2024. The corresponding income decreased by 5,1% over the same period.

 

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 0,6% in the three months ended May 2025 compared with the previous three months. Rail passenger journeys increased by 3,0% (contributing 0,8 of a percentage point), while road passenger journeys decreased by 0,2% (contributing -0,1 of a percentage point).
