Freight transportation

The volume of goods transported (payload) increased by 2,6% in September 2016 compared with September 2015. The corresponding income increased by 6,3% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 7,1% in the third quarter of 2016 compared with the third quarter of 2015. The main contributors to this increase were:
• primary mining and quarrying products (14,3% and contributing 4,8 percentage points); and
• manufactured food, beverages and tobacco products (27,8% and contributing 3,2 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted payload increased by 0,6% in the third quarter of 2016 compared with the second quarter of 2016. Road freight grew by 3,2% (contributing 2,3 percentage points), but this was partially offset by a decline of 5,7% in rail freight (contributing  1,7 percentage points) – see Table C.

Passenger transportation

The number of passenger journeys decreased by 5,9% in September 2016 compared with September 2015. The corresponding income increased by 1,3% over the same period.

Seasonally adjusted passenger journeys increased by 1,0% in the third quarter of 2016 compared with the second quarter of 2016. Rail transportation increased by 1,9% (contributing 1,1 percentage points) over the same period.
