Production: results for December 2024

 

Mining production decreased by 2,4% year-on-year in December 2024. The largest negative contributors were:

·        PGMs (-7,1% and contributing -2,7 percentage points); and

·        gold (-8,4% and contributing -1,1 percentage points).

 

Manganese ore (8,7% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point) and coal (2,5% and contributing 0,5 of a percentage point) were the largest positive contributors.

 

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 3,9% in December 2024 compared with November 2024. This followed month-on-month changes of 0,0% in November 2024 and -2,8% in October 2024.

 

Total mining production was 0,4% higher in 2024 compared with 2023. The 0,4% increase in annual mining production followed an increase of 0,1% in 2023 and a decrease of 7,8% in 2022.

 

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 0,3% in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared with the third quarter of 2024. The largest negative contributors were manganese ore (-11,0% and contributing -0,8 of a percentage point) and iron ore (-4,6% and contributing -0,6 of a percentage point). The largest positive contributors were PGMs (2,5% and contributing 0,8 of a percentage point) and coal (3,8% and contributing 0,8 of a percentage point).

 

Mineral sales: results for December 2024

 

Mineral sales at current prices decreased by 9,1% year-on-year in December 2024. The largest negative contributors were gold (-34,3% and contributing -6,3 percentage points) and iron ore (-32,8% and contributing -5,1 percentage points).

 

The largest positive contributor was coal (11,6% and contributing 2,5 percentage points).

 

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 9,9% in December 2024 compared with November 2024. This followed month-on-month changes of 6,2% in November 2024 and 3,0% in October 2024.

 

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 5,4% in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared with the third quarter of 2024.

 

Total mineral sales at current prices were 1,1% higher in 2024 compared with 2023. The 1,1% increase in annual mineral sales followed a decrease of 10,1% in 2023 and an increase of 3,1% in 2022.
