Key findings: P0307 - Marriages and Divorces, 2024

A total of 97 510 civil marriages, 2 634 customary marriages and 2 229 civil unions were registered in 2024. A comparison with the 2023 data show that registration of all marriages and unions decreased. Registered civil marriages, customary marriages and civil unions decreased by 1,8%; 25,5% and 3,0% respectively. The median ages of bridegrooms and brides on civil marriages were 39 years and 35 years respectively. The 2024 registered civil marriages shows that 77,4% of bridegrooms and 84,5% of brides married for the first time. Most civil marriages were registered in Gauteng (24,1%) and Western Cape (23,0%).

 

The median age of bridegrooms for customary marriages was 35 years and that of brides was 29 years. More than half, 1 422 (54,0%) of the registered customary marriages were from Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. Regarding civil unions, the median age for spouses-1 and spouses-2 were 35 years and 34 years respectively. Civil unions registered in 2024 indicates that Gauteng had the highest proportion with 42,3%.

There were 24 202 completed divorce forms processed in 2024, indicating an increase of 8,9% from the 22 230 divorces processed in 2023. There were more women 13 853 (57,2%) than men 7 976 (33,0%) divorcees who filed the divorce in 2024. The median age at the time of divorce in 2024 were 46 years for males and 42 years for females. Results showed that four in ten divorces 10 101 (41,7%) of the 24 202 in 2024 were from marriages that lasted for less than 10 years.
