Total employment decreased by 80 000 or 0,8% quarter-on-quarter, from 10 589 000 in March 2025 to 10 509 000 in June 2025. This was largely due to a decrease in the following industries: community services (-53 000 or -1,9%), trade (-10 000 or -0,4%), manufacturing (-9 000 or -0,7%), construction (-7 000 or -1,2%), transport (-2 000 or -0,4%) and business services (-2 000 or -0,1%). However, there was an increase in the following industries: mining (2 000 or 0,4%) and electricity (1 000 or 1,6%). Total employment decreased by 229 000 or 2,1% year-on-year between June 2024 and June 2025.
Full-time employment decreased by 44 000 or 0,5% quarter-on-quarter, from 9 457 000 in March 2025 to 9 413 000 in June 2025. This was largely due to a decrease in the following industries: community service (-14 000 or -0,6%), business services (-9 000 or -0,4%), manufacturing (-8 000 or -0,7%), construction (-7 000 or -1,3%), trade (-6 000 or -0,3%) and transport (-2 000 or -0,4%). However, there was an increase in the mining industry (2 000 or 0,4%). Electricity industry showed no change in full-time employment. Full-time employment decreased by 55 000 or 0,6% year-on-year between June 2024 and June 2025.
Part-time employment decreased by 36 000 or 3,2% quarter-on-quarter, from 1 132 000 in March 2025 to 1 096 000 in June 2025. This was due to a decrease in the following industries: community services (-39 000 or -8,1%), trade (-4 000 or -1,6%) and manufacturing (-1 000 or -1,2%). However, there was an increase in the following industries: business services (7 000 or 2,9%) and electricity (1 000 or 100%). Transport and construction industry showed no change in part-time employment. Part-time employment decreased by 174 000 or 13,7% year-on-year between June 2024 and June 2025.
Gross earnings increased by R2,2 billion or 0,2% from R984,7 billion in March 2025 to R986,8 billion in June 2025. This was largely due to an increase in the following industries: community services, trade, construction, transport, mining, electricity and manufacturing. However, there was a decrease in the business services industry. The year-on-year gross earnings increased by R32,8 billion or 3,4% between June 2024 and June 2025.
Basic salary/wages increased by R21,7 billion or 2,5% from R881,1 billion in March 2025 to R902,8 billion in June 2025. This was largely due to an increase in the following industries: community services, business services, trade, manufacturing, construction, mining, transport and electricity. The year-on-year basic salary/wages increased by R31,2 billion or 3,6% between June 2024 and June 2025.
Overtime paid to employees decreased by R0,3 billion or 1,0% from R27,7 billion in March 2025 to R27,4 billion in June 2025. This was largely due to a decrease in the following industries: community services, business services, manufacturing and transport. However, there was an increase in the following industries: trade, construction and electricity. Year-on-year overtime payments decreased by R1,3 billion or 4,5% between June 2024 and June 2025.
