Key findings: P0045 - Quarterly capital expenditure (QCE), March 2025

The total capital expenditure on new assets measured at current prices, for the quarter ended March 2025 was estimated at R116 990 million, showing a decrease of 8,9% compared with the quarter ended December 2024 (R128 374 million).

The largest decrease in capital expenditure on new assets between the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025 was recorded for computer software (-43,4%), followed by computer and IT equipment (-26,9%), vehicles and other transport equipment (-25,4%), ‘other’ assets (-24,8%), plant, machinery and equipment (-10,4%) and buildings and improvements (-4,9%). An increase was recorded for construction works (+27,4%).

Total capital expenditure on new assets increased by 40,7% between the first quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025. The largest year-on-year increase in capital expenditure was recorded for construction works (+241,9%), followed by ‘other’ assets (+230,0%), vehicles and other transport equipment (+30,4%), computer and IT equipment (+6,7%) and computer software (+1,2%). Decreases were recorded for buildings and improvements (-8,8%) and plant, machinery and equipment (-7,0%).

The largest contributor to total capital expenditure on new assets in the quarter ended March 2025 was plant, machinery and equipment (contributing 38,8%), followed by construction works (27,5%), ‘other’ assets (14,3%), vehicles and other transport equipment (10,9%), buildings and improvements (3,5%), computer and IT equipment (3,3%) and computer software (1,7%).

The largest contributor to total capital expenditure on new assets in the quarter ended December 2024 was plant, machinery and equipment (contributing 39,4%), followed by construction works (19,6%), ‘other’ assets (17,3%), vehicles and other transport equipment (13,4%), buildings and improvements (3,4%), computer and IT equipment (4,1%) and computer software (2,8%).
