Kimberley developed from the diamond-mining camps Colesberg Kopje, De Beers New Rush, and Vooruitzicht. Established In 1873, it was named after the British Colonial Secretary, the Earl of Kimberley. The town is most famous for the Big Hole, an open mine that was dug by hand during the diamond rush of the late 1880s. Work in the hole ceased in 1914, after yielding 3 000 kilograms of diamonds. At 215 metres deep and 463 metres wide, the hole is now a major tourist attraction. (GPS coordinates: 28.7648 S, 24.7745 E).
