Malmesbury was named by Sir Lowry Cole, Governor of the Cape Colony from 1829 to 1834, after his father-in-law, Sir James Harris, first Earl of Malmesbury, who had died eight years before. (GPS coordinates: 33.4651 S, 18.7338 E).
