Bloemfontein is the capital city of the Free State and judicial capital of South Africa. The city was established in 1846 on the farm Bloemfontein. It has been said that the farm was named after a person with the surname Bloem, or after an ox that carried the name. Most likely, however, the farm was named after flowers growing at the fountain, from Dutch bloem, meaning 'flower'. (GPS coordinates: 29.1208 S, 26.2376 E).
